This study was conducted to investigate the metallothionein induction by sodium selenite in mercuric Chloride intoxication. Mercuric chloride of 3.0 mg/kg of body weight was administered simultaneously with sodium selenite of either a high dosage of 2.5 mg/kg or low dosage of 1mg/kg via intraperitioneal injecion to rats. After the treatment, 6, 12, 24 and 72 hours later, mercury and selenium content in liver and kidney tissues, serum transaminase activities(SGOT, SGPT), metallothionein, glutathione, glutathione peroxidase sotivity and histological changes were determined.
The results were summarized as follows on: 1. The combined administration of mercury and selenium significantly more decreased mercury concentrations in liver and kidney compared to the administration of mercury only.
2. The combined administration of mercury and selenium significantly more increased renal metallothionein compared to administration of mercury only. This phenomenon was more remarkable when a large dose(2.5 mg/kg) of selenium was administered with mercuric chloride.
3. Glutathione concentration, glutathione peroxidase activity in liver and kidney and serum transaininase activity(SGOT, SGPT) were less suppressed in the combined administration group than the mercury only group.
4. Histological damage in renal tissue was not revealed in rats treated with mercury and selenium.
From the above results, selenium administered simultaneously with mercury decreased mercury concentration in liver and kidney, increased renal metallothionein concentration and decreased the toxicity of mercury. The hypothetic mechanism suggested is that selenium induces the metallothionein combined with Hg and redistributes Hg in tissues.

Many physical and psychological problems, involved in shiftwork were noted, including peptic ulcer, rheumatoid arthritis, sleep disturbances, anxiety, etc. But emotional and psychological problems in nighttime workers were not sufficientiy investigated. To evaluate psychological problems encountered by night duty workers, Symptom Checklist-90-Revision was administered to 61 workers, including 47 night duty workers and 14 ordinary daytime workers, and the results of the both groups were compared.
1. Of 9 symptom dimensions, depression and hostility showed significantly higher scores in night duty workers.
2. Three global indicies(GSI, PST, PSDI) of night duty workers were higher than those of daytime workers, but statistically not significant.
3. Scores in all symptom dimensions, except somatization and hostilithy, of investigation group were lower than those of norm group.
4. In night duty workers, duration of night-time work per day was positively correlated with depression, anxiety, phobic anxiety and psychoticism.
From the above results, it was suggested that psychological health maintenance program should be developed for night duty workers.

Chromic acid has widely been used for decorative chromium plating, hard chromium plating, and surface treatment of raw materials. However, its strong oxidizing action has been found to cause corrosion of mucous membranes and skin, such as the nasal septum, conjunctiva, face, and hand skin. Excessive exposure to chmmic acid has frequently caused ulceration and perforation of a nasal septum. These ulcerations are painless and confined to the cartilaginous portion at the lower anterior part of the septum known as Kisselbach's or Little's area. This study was undertaken to investigate the general characteristics, actual conditions of the working environment and the prevalence rate of nasal septal perforation due to inhalation of chromic acid mist in workers employed at plating industries. This study was conducted on 627 workers who were exposed to chromic acid from July to November 1988.
The results were summarized as follows: 1. The mean age of workers with septal perforation was 26 years and the mean working duration was 84 months.
2. The prevalence rates of nasal septal perforation and ulceration of mucosa of the plating workers were 31.7% and 10.5% respectively.
3. The significant variables related with occurrence of nasal septal perforation were age of workers, working duration, kinds of plating, efficiency of local ventilation and performance of health examinations.
From the above results, occurrences of nasal septal perforation in plating workers were affected by the duration of chromium exposed work and state of the working environment. Prevention of occupationsl diseases fri plating workers will be accomplished by implementation of an industrial health care system which includes thorough health checkups for workers and regular environmental monitoring.

To study the relationship between the urinary hippuric acid and subjective symptoms in toluene exposed workers, urinary hippuric acid was measured and subjective symptoms questionnarire was surveyed in 93 toluene exposed male workers and 96 non-exposed office male workers.
The results are as follows: 1. Mean concentration of urinary hippuric acid, which is significantly higher in exposed group than in non-exposed group, was 1.3 g/l, 1.2(GM, GSD respectively) in exposed group and 0.6 g/l, 1.2(GM, GSD respectively) in non-exposed group.
2. Mean concentration of toluene in the air in the workplace, which is significantly higher in the department of coater than in the department of mixing, was 23.4 ppm, 6.2(GM, GSD respectively) in the department of mixing and 59.8 ppm, 3.4(GM, GSD respectively) in the department of coater.
3. Complained rates of subjective symptoms were significantly higher in exposed group than in non exposed group in all items.
4. In exposed group, complained rate of CNS related symptoms was higher than that of irritation related symptoms in the first part but there was no significant difference and complained rate of irritation related symptoms in the second part was significantly higher than that of CNS related symptoms.
5. In exposed group, complained rates of subjective symptoms were not compatible with dose-response relationship by the concentration of urinary hippuric acid, duration of work, department of work, and age group retrospectively.

In order In interpret the relationship among many variables, urinary mercury and at the same time mercury concentration in air were measured for 254 workers of a fluorescent lamp manufacturing factory. And monthly mercury consumption amounts, numbers of monthly producing fluorescent lamps, numbers of inferior lamps and numbers of breakage lamps, numbers of vacuum exhaustion pumps and frequencies of mercury infusion were also investigated from January 1988 to March in 1989.
The results were as follows; 1. On the mercury concentration in air by producing line and by working site, all of them were exceed the threshold limit value (0.05mg/m(2)).
2. The highest mercury concentration in air by sampling point was found at the floor of workplace (0.334mg/m(2)) and next were at vacuum exhaustion pimp (0.183mg/m(2)), and breathing zone of workers (0.103mg/m(2)) in order.
3. The highest mean of the mercury concentration in urine by producing line was the automatic exhausting line (80.8microgram/1) and next were high speed exhausting line (72.4microgram/1), and Manual exhausting line (35.8microgram/1) in order. Distribution of workers of the mercury concentration in urine more than 200microgram/1 by working site was the highest (10%) in the vacuum exhaustion pump part and next were sealing part (6.6%), packing part (4.6%), and stem part (4.1%) in order.
4. The correlation coefficient between mercury concentration in urine and in air was the highest (0.302) and next were numbers of breakage lamps (0.223), frequencies of mercury infusion (0.223), numbers of inferior lamps (0.205) in order.
The authors have experinced 8 cases of chronic carbon disulfide poisoning in workers engaged in the viacase rayon industry during the period between March 1987 and September 1988. Cases of carbon disulfide poisoning has not been reported in Korea till then. Carbon disulfide is primarily a neurotoxic poison, therefore those symptoms indicating central and peripheral nervous damage are very important. And it has toxic effects on the various organs such as skin, eye, ear, and respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, hepatic, genitourinary, hematological, and endocrine system. Occupational histories were obtained, and clinical findings and laboratory findings were analysed on all cases.
1. Seven (7) cases had been exposed to carbon disulfide for more than 10 years, and 1 case has been exposed for 6 years.
2. Most common symptoms were neurological symptoms such as gait disturbance, extremity weakness, paresthesia, and speech disturbance.
3. Involvement of central nervous system was noted in 7 cases through abnormal findings of electroencephalography, brain computerized tomography, neurological signs, and psychological test. Needle electromyography and nerve conduction study showed polyneuropathy in all cases. Ophthalmological abnormalities were found in 7 cases, mainly retinal microaneurysms and peripheral constriction of the visual field. Renal damage appeared in 4 cases, increase of serum cholesterol and/or triglyceride level appeared in 3 cases, and dercrease of erythrocyte and hemoglobin appeared in 2 cases. And hypertenison appeared in 2 cases, and diabetes appeared in 1 case. One(1) case who has been exposed tn carbon disulfide for 6 years showed polyneuropathy and peripheral constriction of the visual field.

One year field study of 400 lead workers on the effect of maintenance free respirator(MFR) to alleviate the lead burden revealed that MFR protection program with biological monitoring with simple measurement of zinc protoporphyrin in whole blood could be applied as an interim method to prevent lead workers from lead burden even in fairly bad working condition until fundamental environmental control will be taken in korea.

This study attempts to assess the status of hand injured patients and their medical care utilization among the industrial accident compensation insured. The study subjects were the 8,648 hand injured patients (2,951 inpatients and 5,697 outpatients) who were attended in the medical facilities of Seoul area from January, 1986 to August, 1988.
The following results were obtained.
1. About 90% of hand injured patients were male, and about 62% of them were less than 30 years of age. 44.4% of inpatients recieved treatment in general hospital and 42.0% of outpatients in clinic.
2. The highest mean medical cost by facility were 929,000 won of general hospital in inpatient, and 108,000 won of clinic and general hospital in outpatient.
3. The highest mean medical cost by injury were 690,000 won of amputation in inpatient and 126,000 won of fracture in outpatient.
4. The longest mean patient days by facility 25.3 days of general hospital in inpatient and 20.7 days of clinic in outpatient. According to the type of injury, 23.1 days of open wound in inpatient and 23.0 days of fracture in outpatient.
5. The, highest mean medical cost per day by facility was 39,000 won of inpatient and 8,000 won of outpatient in general hospital. According to the type of injury, these were 34,000 won of dislocation and burns in inpatient and 7,000 won of dislocation and burns in outpatient.
Occupational allergic contact dermatitis cases who had visited the patch test clinics of Seoul National University Hospital(1984-1988) and Koryo General Hospital(1982-1988) were analyzed in this study. Patch test was performed with either Hollister-Stier standard battery or European standard battery in addition to the patients own materials and other commercially available antigens. Patch test was peformed according to the recommendation of International Contact Dermatitis Research Group.
The result is summarized as follows.
1. Out of 946 cases 65 (6.9%) were suspected as having occupational dermatoses clinically and 35 (3.7%) were diagnosed as occupational allergic contact dermtitis after patch test.
2. Sixteen (45.7%) out of the 35 patients were male and 19 (54.3%) were female. Twenty one (60.0%) patients were in the age of 20 to 40 years.
3. The occupational distribution of 35 patients were medical personnels (8), cement workers (7), industrial workers (5), hair dressers (5), farmers (3), merchants (3), cooks (2) and painters (2).
4. Potassium dichromate, nickel sulfate and rubber chemicals were the most common occupational allergens. We also reviewed the Korean literatures related to the occupational dermatoses.

Physical examinations including muscle tenderness and neurological tests, were performed on two hundred ninety international telephone operators and their relations with work conditions and subjective symptoms were analyzed.
The results obtained were as follows: 1. The prevalence of muscle tenderness was significantly higher in the shoulder and the arms than in other parts of body.
2. No difference of prevalence of muscle tenderness was noted according to the age of workers.
3. The prevalence of muscle tenderness on the shoulder and the arms significantly increased after the work duration of 5 years.
4. Muscle tenderness on the arm, the neck and the shoulder were dominant in the right side.
5. The prevalences of paraesthesia on right shoulder and right arm were higher than those on other parts of body.
6. A significant linear association was noted between the number of tender areas and positive response to questions.
7. The prevalences of positive Spurling test and Morley test were higher in the work duration group of 15 years and more.
8. It seemed that muscle tenderness examination and Morley test were more useful for the diagnosis of cervicobrachial disorders.

A questionnaire study was carried out on 290 international telephone operators to find Out their characteristics of musculoskeletal symptoms in relation to work conditions (work posture, work load etc.) and work duration. Results were as follows: 1. The C7-earhole angle, the elbow angle, the left arm abduction angle and the right arm abduction angle all did not meet the recommended criteria and, therefore, seemed to have increased the static load of muscles of the neck, the shoulder and the arms.
2. The prevalence of musculoskeletal complaints was higher in the shoulder and the arms which followed by the neck, the lower hack, the hands and fingers, the hack and the lower limbs.
3. The prevalences of musculoskeletal complaints in the hack and the lower hack increased significantly, as the work duration extended over 5 years.
4. In general, the prevalence of musculoskeletal complaints tended to be lower among habitual exercise group than others.
5. In view of the high prevalence of musculoskeletal complaints even among those with short work experience, it seemed necessary to introduce an adequate control program of cervicobrachial disorders from an early stage of employment.
